The Rickshaw Pullers
Cycle rickshaws were a major technological innovation when introduced in Delhi in the 1940s. Attempts to limit their numbers by municipal authorities have failed. The most recent cap, overturned yesterday, had been imposed in 1994. Most rickshaw pullers in the Indian capital are migrant labourers who have come to the city in the hope of earning a living for their families in poverty-stricken rural areas. After paying for the rental of the rickshaw itself, they often earn less than 100 rupees (£1.23) for a 15-hour day.
